Mister Ron's Basement #650

Our 650th EPISODE!!!

Elbert Hubbard was one of the most popular American writers of the early twentieth century. He had an enormous output of books, stories, and articles, and he founded a community of artisans in East Aurora, New York known as the Roycrofters, who produced beautiful hand-crafted books and furniture. He worked with Frank Lloyd Wright, and was much sought after on the lecture circuit.

He and his wife died aboard the ill-fated Lusitania in 1915.

This week, we will be reading some of Hubbard's humorous pieces from a trio of slim volumes published by the Roycrofters in 1920.

Today's tale, ironically, is called 'Titanic Survivor.'

Mister Ron's Basement #636

This may be one of the best episodes of Mister Ron's Basement, ever!

Mortimer Thomson was a popular humorist of the pre-Civil War years who wrote under the pen name of 'Q. K. Philander Doesticks, P. B." He was part of a group of wild bohemian humorists who gathered at Pfaff's Beer Cellar in New York City, and wrote clever satirical pieces for the New York Tribune.

Today we read the Introduction to the book 'Doesticks -- What He Says' and the chapter concerning Niagara Falls -- 'Doesticks on a Bender' from 1855.

Mister Ron's Basement #633

A Truly Special episode of the Basement today -- While George W. Peck's writing career was just starting to take off, he ran the lecture circuit during 1876 through 1878, delivering what was essentially a stand-up comedy routine about his experiences in the Civil War. This led to fame as a humorist, and eventually to a successful career in Politics as a two term Governor of Wisconsin.

Here we present, in its entirety, 'How Peck and Another Mule Crushed the Rebellion.'
