Mister Ron's Basement #59

Truly great humor withstands aging. Herewith is one of the funniest stories ever written -- 'To Nature and Back Again' -- written back in 1918 by Stephen Leacock, our author of the week in the Basement. This thing had me doubling over with laughter when I first read it. Hopefully, you'll laugh too. Give it a listen. Additionally, we've got a touch of 'Dancing in the Barn' from 1907.

Mister Ron's Basement #58

More Stephen Leacock, from 1918 -- 'This Strenuous Age' -- also a little taste of 'Ma Ragtime Baby' from 1899.

Stephen Leacock was a major inspiration to Jack Benny. Back when Benny was in vaudeville, he would crack up reading this stuff. Undoubtedly, Leacock's snide descriptions of people of all sorts was an influence on Benny's later radio and television career.

Ellis Parker Butler's idea for a new insurance policy still makes as much sense today as it did in 1906. And for people who complain about the stupid lyrics in today's popular music, an example of how well-written songs were back in1914.
