The second story, 'The Value of Truth, from the same edition of the Eagle, comes from Huntley's 'Salad' column, and also deals with crazy doings in a Brooklyn court. Finally, we offer a tale of the Spoopendyke family discovering Huntley's best-selling 1881 book about them in the 1882 tale 'Opposed to Publicity.' This is one of the best episodes we have ever done! Mister Ron's Basement #878 Author William Wright was much better known during his productive career as Dan De Quille. From the 1860s onward, he covered the fascinating stories of miners and prospectors in Virginia City, Nevada during the height of the silver mining boom, for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper. His stories were both factual and humorous. In 1862, he was joined by another writer for the paper, a young Samuel Clemens, who would not adopt the name of Mark Twain until a year later. The two stayed friends for years, and in 1876, Twain helped De Quille publish (and wrote the introduction to) 'The Big Bonanza,' a book that details the history and exploits of the miners who discovered and ran the famous Comstock Lode, and other mining operations. This week, we will read some of the humorous stories from this book. Today we learn what happens to a donkey that gets a bit too greedy in 'The Washoe Canary.' Mister Ron's Basement #849 Our Monday book serialization is George Ade's 1903 collection, 'In Babel -- Stories of Chicago.' The stories in this book range from the hysterically funny to the pathetically sad. Altogether, they paint a fascinating portrait of turn-of-the-last-century Chicago. Today's story is of a working class family elevated despite themselves by no-nonsense daughter named Rosie in 'Best of the Farleys.' Mister Ron's Basement #848 SUNDAY SALAD presents TWO Stanley Huntley stories about death (sort of). In the first, a widower discusses his wife's burial services with the editor of the newspaper in 'The Bottom Facts About the Funeral' from 1882, then Mr. and Mrs. Spoopendyke have a wacky political discussion in 'A Dead Lock' from 1881. This story is a shining example of the classic comic character of Mrs. Spoopendyke, undoubtedly an influence on on Gracie Allen, years later. Mister Ron's Basement #846 Fanny Fern wrote her weekly column for the New York Ledger right until her death in 1872. This week we will feature some of her writings from the 1870 collection 'Ginger Snaps.' Fanny Fern's granddaughter Ethel Thomson (later changed to Ethel Parton), who was eight years old in 1870, used incidents from today's story in her first novel, 'Melissa Ann -- A Little Girl of the 1820s' which she wrote over sixty years later in 1931! Today's tale is called 'A Look Backward.'
