Mister Ron's Basement #593

Beginning a new series -- 'The Sunday Salad' -- stories written by Stanley Huntley. Huntley had a fascinating career, and his life is as compelling as any tales we have told here in the Basement. During the last years of Huntley's life, he wrote a humorous weekly column for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle called 'The Sunday Salad.'

The feature ran an assortment of humorous pieces, including news items, funny poetry, spoofs of popular writers, and most importantly, immortal stories of the battling couple, Mr. and Mrs. Spoopendyke.

Most (but not all) of the Huntley pieces we will read from the 'Sunday Salad' will be Spoopendyke stories. They are superbly funny, and remained immensely popular in collected volumes with American readers for decades beyond Huntley's death in 1885.

Today's Spoopendyke story, from February 29, 1880, is called 'The Fifteen Puzzle.'

A Special Holiday Treat!

Robert J. Burdette delivered his lecture 'The Rise and Fall of the Mustache' from 1877 to packed houses for well over thirty years. It is almost totally forgotten today, and while much of it is terribly outdated, most of it is timeless, and worth hearing today. It will make you laugh, and cry.

This is, without a doubt, the absolute longest story we have read, or ever will read, here in the Basement. It is worth listening to. Your comments are appreciated.

Marcus Mills Pomeroy, more popularly known as 'Brick' Pomeroy, published what were termed 'sensational' newspapers in Wisconsin and New York City in his day. He also published a number of extremely funny books. This week, we will be featuring pieces from his 1868 collection, 'Nonsense, or Hits and Criticisms on the Follies of the Day.'

It was a common practice in the 19th Century to have 'sociable' parties as fund raisers for missionaries, with a variety of games. A frustrating visit to one of these 'sociables' is related in the tale 'Slobbering Parties -- For the Heathen.'

By the way, Pomeroy uses the word 'womblecropt,' which Mister Ron has noticed in a few different 19th century stories. Anybody have any clue to this particular word? Please write!

Frederic Thomas Somerby, writing under the pen name of 'Cymon' ran a column of sketches of the people and doings in the beautiful, quaint town of Newburyport, for the readers of The Boston Post. In 1852, he published a collection of these pieces under the title 'Hits and Dashes, or A Medley of Sketches and Scraps Touching People and Things.'

While many of these 'Cymon' sketches appear to be true stories, this one may be a bit tongue in cheek. Still, the author paints a colorful picture in a tale of two whitewashers and a barrel of spirits in 'Whitewashing Extraordinary.'

Mister Ron's Basement #554

Frederic Thomas Somerby, writing under the pen name of 'Cymon' ran a column of sketches of the people and doings in the beautiful, quaint town of Newburyport, for the readers of The Boston Post. In 1852, he published a collection of these pieces under the title 'Hits and Dashes, or A Medley of Sketches and Scraps Touching People and Things.'

The author tackles a tale of a fifteen year old boy and a young lass in what could best be tastefully described as 'A Situation.'

Mister Ron's Basement #546

Mister Ron returns from his hiatus with a unique find -- stories from the 1905 collection, 'The Philosophy of Johnnie the Gent -- A Collection of Humorous Slang Stories' by Frank Hutchison.

Today's tale, 'The Story of a First-Past-the-Post Frame-Up That Proved A Boomerang' has a number of elements that seem strangely similar to the movie 'The Sting.' We are assuming this is a coincidence, but your comments are welcome!

Since posting this episode, I have discovered that 'The Sting' screenwriter David S. Ward was heavily influenced by David Maurer's 1940 book, 'The Big Con.' After reading that book, I discovered that much of what passes for humorous fiction in 'Johnnie the Gent' is actually highly authentic, well researched tales based on the activities of con men back in 1905! Perhaps Maurer himself was inspired by "Johnnie the Gent.'
