His character Jack Downing was the progenitor of the 'Shrewd Yankee' that has become a mainstay in American fiction. From 1830 (reprinted in an 1859 collection), Jack gets a letter from his mother -- 'Mrs. Downing Urges Her Son to Come Home.' His character Jack Downing was the progenitor of the 'Shrewd Yankee' that has become a mainstay in American fiction. Maybe it was this letter he received from his uncle in 'Uncle Joshua Tells How He Went to Boston and Took Dinner With the Gineral Court.' Originally written in 1830, this version is from an 1859 book collection.
